Jailbreak Verizon iPhone

February 14th, 2011

Jailbreak Verizon iPhone is the process by which the iPhone’s firmware is modified to allow unsigned code to be run to gain access to files that Apple wouldn’t normally let you have access too. Jailbreaking the iPhone adds unofficial application installers to your iPhone such as Cydia or Icy, which let you download many 3rd-party applications previously unavailable through the App Store.

The risks of jailbreaking your Verizon iPhone is very minor. Worst case scenario, you can always restore your iPhone to factory settings using iTunes.

Here are a few recommended links for more information about jailbreak:

Jailbreak and Unlock Coming to the Verizon iPhone

February 13th, 2011

One of the first questions that might have come to your mind after the announcement of the Verizon iPhone this morning probably was: can you jailbreak Verizon iPhone? Can you unlock it? That’s something we obviously can’t know for sure until our favorite Team of iPhone hackers get their hands on one of those babies.

However, I would assume that the jailbreaking process for the Verizon iPhone might not be different from AT&T’s. I assume the iOS loaded will have the very same backbones, even though iOS for Verizon will include extra features such as the ability to use your iPhone as a hotspot…

Something tells me if there is an exploit to be found, the exploit will be present in both versions of iOS.

Now regarding the Verizon iPhone unlock, I think it’s a completely different story. The basebands will be completely different and seeing how CDMA is not nearly as popular as GSM, I think the Dev Team will focus on the latter.

But again, we won’t know for sure until the Verizon iPhone comes out.

WiFi Personal Hotspot now on AT&T iPhone 4 with iOS 4.3, but jailbreaking is cheaper

May 22nd, 2011

News that iOS 4.3 will bring the WiFi Personal Hotspot feature to AT&T iPhone 4′s is welcome, but I’m going to reiterate my opinion from the past regarding the Personal Hotspot usage fee. If you missed it, it goes like this: what you’re really paying for is convenience and ease of use.
Jailbreaking & MyWi vs AT&T’s Personal Hotspot

Here’s how this breaks down:

Jailbreaking & MyWi: Slightly more technical to enable, requires jailbreaking the iPhone, one time $20 MyWi purchase, works on iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 with any version of iOS.
AT&T Personal Hotspot: Convenient & easily enabled, costs $20 every month in addition to your standard data plan charges, works only on iPhone 4 with iOS 4.3.

Just like with Verizon, paying for AT&T’s Hotspot use over the course of the year will rack up $240 in additional charges. If you jailbreak and use MyWi, you pay $20 once for the app and then you just use your existing data plan.

Who should pay the AT&T Personal Hotspot fee? And who should jailbreak?
As I’ve said before, paying AT&T (or Verizon) the personal hotspot usage fee is for those who want ease and convenience. There’s practically no setup involved, it’s just signing up for the hotspot plan and then selecting the option on the iPhone 4 to enable the feature, it’s as easy as it gets. For anyone that is less technical or who doesn’t mind paying for simplicity, forking over the cash to AT&T or Verizon is the way to go.

And then there’s people like me. If you’re technically inclined and familiar with jailbreaking, just buy MyWi and create your own iPhone wireless hotspot (it works on older iPhones too, while Personal Hotspot is limited to iPhone 4 only). The other nice thing about MyWi is that it offers a free 3 day trial, so you can jailbreak your phone and then test out the wireless hotspot functionality without any obligation to buy anything. If you hate it or it doesn’t work for you, reverse the jailbreak and just go with the monthly plan option.

PS: Jailbreaking is legal
Finally, a reminder that jailbreaking is not illegal. No Apple doesn’t like jailbreaks, and you’ll want to undo the jailbreak by restoring your iPhone before you take it in for Apple service, but it’s perfectly legal.

Why Jailbreak Cydia founder gives reasons why jailbreaking the iPhone is worthwhile

May 21st, 2011

If you’ve been sitting on the sidelines wondering why you should jailbreak your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad, you’re probably not alone. There’s plenty of reasons, but the video above lets us hear a few directly from Jay Freeman, aka Saurik, of Cydia fame. His main pitch is that jailbreaking gives you the freedom to do things outside of the normal scope of applications, including:

  • 5 icons on your dock
  • Cool animation customizations
  • Quick access panels to settings
  • Twitter client from a status bar
  • Forward voicemail messages to other people as emails
  • Custom lock screens
  • Black keyboard vs white default
  • iOS appearance themes

In other words, jailbreaking creates a tinkerers wonderland, allowing for thorough customization of the iOS interface and experience. If you watch the video, you’ll see a couple examples of these customizations in action, some are just pure eyecandy and others are genuinely useful enough that Apple should consider adopting them (forwarding voicemails, custom lockscreens, etc).

What app should you use to jailbreak? In the video, Saurik currently recommends using redsn0w (you can read a tutorial to jailbreak 4.3.2 with redsn0w here, it’s easy just follow the instructions).

The downsides to jailbreaking? You have to keep on top of iOS updates to make sure you don’t lose your jailbreak. Saurik recommends just waiting a few days until after an iOS update is released so that a jailbreak is available for the new version, which has been the standard jailbreaker approach for a while now. And no, jailbreaking is not illegal so there is nothing to worry about there.

For whatever reason, Saurik doesn’t mention carrier unlocking, but that’s also a common reason people jailbreak their iPhones in regions where hardware is sold locked by default. Unlocking is getting more and more challenging though, and current methods only apply to older firmware. The good news is that the GSM iPad 2 is unlocked regardless of where you buy it, and this may hint at a more liberalized approach to carrier locking in future versions of iPhone, or so we can hope.

Verizon set to put warning stickers on all phones that may provide location information

May 20th, 2011

Verizon has issued a written response to Massachusetts Congressman Ed Markey’s call for answers on the recent revelations that phones may provide your location data without your knowledge. The letter written by Peter B. Davidson, who is the Senior Vice President of Federal Government Relations at Verizon, goes into detail on how Verizon goes to great lengths to inform and protect its customers from revealing their location data to third parties.

Verizon now plan on taking a further step to include a sticker on every phone that it sells; warning users that it could track location data. The removable sticker will be placed on the screen of the device. Verizon say that the labels will start to appear very soon. We assume that this will include all models of the iPhone too.

Apple has already released a Q&A to address its customer concerns; Apple and Google are still due to appear at a hearing in May to explain their roles in the situation in more detail.
